A Rucker Christmas + Marley & Me

Rucker family Christmas tradition has never included the apparently very popular practice of taking the family to see a movie. Typically we spend the morning eating breakfast, then opening presents, then having extended family over and repeating the process of eating food and opening presents. It's worked out pretty well for us.

This year however, was different. I mean we still ate all that food in the morning, but instead of stuffing our faces with more food in the afternoon, we went to a movie with the family instead. And the movie we chose was the Labrador retriever-starring Marley & Me, with Jeniffer Aniston and Owen Wilson.

Having already read the book, I knew that the story would resonate with my family, considering there were 5 dogs at my house on Christmas and 3 of them were labs. One of the pups, my brother's dog, Ripley, even reminds me a lot of Marley because of his.. "energetic" ways.

So first things first: thank GOODNESS we ordered the tickets online because this was definitely the movie of choice for families this Christmas. The movie was sold out and the line to get in the theater wrapped throughout the entire building. It would be no easy task to find all 11 of us seats. But instead of trying to find an empty row of 11 seats, we ended up sitting in several small groups of seats scattered around the theater, which ended up working out fine.

I was really excited about this movie. And I was EXTREMELY pleased with the final product. A journalism professor of mine once said, "You can never go wrong with a good dog story," but I think you can- by taking a good dog story and translating it poorly to the screen. Luckily that didn't happen with Marley & Me.

The movie is based on the book, Marley & Me, by John Grogan. The (true) story centers around Grogan, playing in the film by Owen Wilson, and the love he and his family develop for their rather mischievous dog, Marley. Wilson did a fantastic job as Grogan, the main character (besides Marley) in the story. I was glad to see Owen pull off a slightly more dramatic role than we're used to seeing him in.

Jennifer Aniston also did a great job as Grogan's wife Jenny, who has many emotional ups and downs throughout the story (which is told from the beginning of their marriage, through raising three kids). There were only a couple of occasions where I thought "Rachel!" but then again, who wouldn't? It's Jennifer Aniston.

Most dog movies use cheesy chase scenes and ridiculous scenarios to provide the entertainment, and don't get me wrong, M&M had some of these, but these types of gags weren't relied upon to carry the movie.

M&M is a movie with true heart that will no doubt have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

After it was over and we all took a moment to compose ourselves, the 11 Ruckers regrouped and all agreed: Marley & Me was a fantastic. Everyone, whether they had read the book or not, really loved the film.

You definitely owe it to yourself (and Jennifer Aniston) to go see Marley & Me this weekend.

You'll be glad you did!

Happy Merry Christmas!

Well I'm back from my final Walt Disney World trip of the year, and it was amazing! I loved seeing the parks at Christmas time, and I loved that it was 80 degrees all week. Seriously, the weather was PERFECT.
So here are a couple photos from the trip to hold you over until I get a full post done.

Miley Cyrus got nominated for a Golden Globe ?!

Yes, you read that correctly; Tween queen Miley Cyrus was nominated this morning for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a motion picture. Miley co-wrote the song "I Thought I Lost You," for the animated Disney film, Bolt, which she also voiced a character in.

Despite the mishaps, Miley's probably the best decision Disney's made in the last 5 years. By my best estimates, she's made them a kascrillion dollars now. This also means that it's likely for her to also get nominated for an Academy Award. And I'd really like that to happen just to see how Demi and Selena react when Miles accepts her Oscar. ET will be all over that. They love the tween drama.

The Golden Globes air Sunday, January 11, on NBC.

I love my crazy Christmas catalogs...

Have you ever taken the time to actually go through some of the hundreds of Christmas gift catalogs you get in the mail? I did today, and yall, there is some crazy crap in there!

Take the catalog I got today, "X-treme Geek."The first thing that caught my eye (on page 11 for any of you following along) is the cruise ship and iceberg-shaped ice tray urging you to "Recall The Tragic Maiden Voyage Sinking of the Titanic" as you down a Gin & Tonic. Or "Gin & Titonic" as they humorously say..

I'm glad we've gotten to a point where national tragedies can be belittled so much that they are reenacted in ice cube/alcoholic drink form and sold for $6.95 out of a Christmas catalog.Of course, that's not nearly as bad as the inflatable Titanic where kids joyously slide down the deck of the ship just like the ill-fated passengers slid to their deaths.(I've seen this in person. It really exists.)

Now let's move to page 14 and the weather station that uses weather girl to give you the forecast... "Just Like TV!"If you can't see clearly, there is a girl in a bikini on the screen of the weather forecaster. The description says "The 'Weather Girl' provides visual indications of how many articles of clothing you'll need for the day (if any)."

I'm not sure what station the inventor of this gadget is watching, but I've never seen the weather presented in that way. Also, it's only 79 degrees in that picture and she's already wearing a bikini. One wonders what it would show during a typical 100 degree summer day in Texas...

Finally the very last page provides us with the most creepy product of all. And this time the product itself isn't creepy, but rather the weirdo presenting it.This guy is clearly trying to channel his idol Billy Mays, of OxyClean and Orange Glo fame.
But make no mistake, this guy is no Billy Mays. It looks like they just cleaned up the guy who offered me free speakers out of a trashy van in the Target parking lot a couple years ago. (Whatever you do, do NOT follow him to the van.)

Anyway, that's just a few of the wacko things I've found this year. Have yall seen anything ca-razy whilst Christmas shopping?

Hey Newspapers: Give it Up. Seriously.

For some reason it's really hard for the papers to get the clue that no one reads them anymore. Hello, by the time we get the newspaper, the news on it is completely wrong. That is, if we ever GET the newspaper... I'm talking to you NEW YORK TIMES, who have completely slacked off on delivering my paper. Since when? Oh that's right, Election Day.
Way to go, NYT!
To me, trying to hold on to the newspaper is like still releasing VHS tapes. "But people still want to watch their movies on VHS!" No, no they don't. We have DVDs now and even Blu-ray, which present the movie so much better than VHS. You'd be an idiot to still be spending money on videotapes (unless they're a quarter at Half Price Books. I have nothing against that).

The same goes for newspapers. We have the Internet, blogs, and YouTube which constantly update our news free of charge. We even have the newspapers' Web sites which post all the stories free! So why on Earth are we supposed to PAY MONEY to have a heap of paper delivered to our front door (which doesn't necessarily even come) that we then have to poke through in an attempt to find anything of interest to us?

Besides, let's talk about the MASSIVE amounts of paper these monstrosities waste. You should come over to my apartment and SEE the pile of newspapers in my living room. I'm 99% sure I could make a full-grown tree with it by now, and that's only with the papers that New York Times has ACTUALLY delivered to me. There's no telling what it would look like if I had everything I had paid for. I mean, recycling's great, but how about not creating the problem in the first place?
I think everyone just needs to get an iPhone or a Kindle where they can digitally read their news. Heck, stores could even digitize their coupons and such to make it easier for them to be carried around! (Brilliant idea, btw.)

But in any case newspapers, stop acting like the economy has anything to do with your misfortune. It's your product. We live in a digital world now. And the sooner you accept that, the better off you'll be.

(Which, by the way, this also applies to the Broadway musicals that are closing. It's not the economy that sucks, it's the shows. I'm hoping my friend Logan will address this in the near future on The Log Blog.)

Your Disney Favorites!

A few days ago I asked what some of your favorite things to do at Walt Disney World were and here are some of the responses!

Cortney said: "Wishes is my all time favorite! Gives me goosebumps every time."

It's true Cortney, I never take a Disney trip without making Wishes be the last thing I do. Amazing.

Tim said: "I love Holidays Around The World at Epcot. The countries have storytellers that share their respective 'legends and lore of the season.'"

Robyn said: "Blizzard beach is definitely my favorite Florida Disney thing."I've never been to a Disney water park, but I'm sure that during the heat of summer that would be an awesome addition to the trip.

Donna said: "Without a doubt, my favorite thing about Disney World is the Rock n' Roller Coaster. Such fond memories of that ride. Test Track is also pretty high on the list."Sarah said: "The best thing about Disney, by far, is going to the Magic Kingdom and walking down Mainstreet USA with the castle in the background. The sight, sound, and feel of it always makes me teary eyed and on more than one occasion I've actually cried due to the overwhelming feeling of happiness that overcomes me (cheesy, yes, but also true). Also, Mainstreet USA has the best rice crispy treats, just FYI."I've had the Main Street rice crispy treats too! They're HUGE! And also, amazing.

Sarah also asked me to clarify my stance on loving the Finding Nemo musical at Disney's Animal Kingdom... I agree, there are parts that aren't my favorite (the sharks), but overall it's the best musical production that is currently showing in Disney parks. I love the music, the puppets, and of course, the bubbles (who wouldn't).Maybe you had a not-so-great cast. I've seen it 5 times now and each time I've had a different Dori. They can really make or break that show.

Give it another chance!

I'm really excited this trip for all the Christmas decorations that are gonna be up. Especially the Osbourne Spectacle of Lights (no, not those Osbournes) at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Thanks for sending in your favorites, and keep 'em coming!

Hey Mack, Quit Whining - You Knew the Rules

Those are not my words, but rather the words of this very fiesty banner plane.

The plane started flying directly over the University of Texas at Austin campus around noon and can still be seen making circles around the 40 acres (at this point, more than 30 minutes).

I would assume it is referencing head coach Mack Brown's displeasure over the outcome of the BCS college football ratings, putting the Texas Longhorns 3rd, behind Oklahoma.
Of course, it may have nothing to do with football. The banner did not specify which "rules" Mack should have known about. Maybe Mack lost a game of poker with buddies or forgot that it was his day to take out the trash. We may never know.

What we do know is that whoever funded this plane has WAY too much money. Seriously, people could have used that cash. Needy people. Like me, who REALLY wants an HDTV.

Also, isn't whining about someone whining twice as bad?

Just my opinion.

We got your back Mack.

Gotta Love QVC and People Fainting On Camera!

QVC has provided us with great clips in the past, like "Guy Falls Off Ladder" and Dirty Jobs's Mike Rowe's selling cat accessories.

Now comes "Vendor Faints During On-Air Presentation" and yall, it is awesome. What's so bad is that you can totally see this one coming. She doesn't say a word the whole time, just switches between blank stares and excited outbursts attempting to match the host's excitement. Apparently it was all just too much for her.

I kinda feel bad for her, but that didn't stop me from watching this 14 times in a row...

Seriously Weatherpeople?

I'd like you to take a quick look at the weather report on my iPhone today, from Yahoo Weather apparently, that shows the current temperature in Austin is 38 degrees. That's great and all except for the fact that it shows today's LOW temperature as 56...

Come on guys, we cut you a LOT of slack. I mean basically any time you say it's gonna rain and it doesn't (which is 99% of the time) we let you off the hook. It's not like you can control the weather or anything.

But something so basic as temperature? I would be willing to give you a free pass even if you just changed the highs and lows as the day goes on and the temperatures change.

Just a little more effort plz.

What's Your Favorite Thing About Walt Disney World?

In a couple weeks I'll be making another trip to my favorite place on Earth, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I've never been to Disney during Christmastime so I'm really excited to see all the decor and everyone in the Christmas spirit. The frantic and frustrated family-traveling Christmas spirit, that is.

I'm going with a couple of friends who have never been to the parks, and I'll be showing them around. So it got me thinking about what my favorite things are about Disney World, like:

  • Disney's Animal Kingdom (as a whole)
  • Finding Nemo the Musical
  • Mickey's Philharmagic
  • Soarin'
  • Illuminations/Wishes/Fantasmic
There are many, MANY more, but those are just the first things that came to me.

I'm curious to see what everyone else's favorite things are at Disney, so leave a comment or drop me a line at RuckitUp@Gmail.com and tell me what you like the most. Whether it's a park, a ride, a character, a show or anything else, I'd love to hear!
